Romance Horror- Relationships of Nightmares

Romantic Horror genre? I Don’t think so.  These movies will more likely make you happy that you are not in an overbearing, back breaking relationship then make you want to cuddle up to someone.  Relationships of Nightmares is the theme for my February Horror List.  Movies that center around a relationship (romantic or platonic) that are either not what it seems, or the stuff of nightmares.

These movies are not placed in any specific order.  Please feel free to comment at the bottom and let me know your favorite Relationship of Nightmares movies.

Available to stream on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, and iTunes

Forced together by a zombie apocalypse, two former baseball players (Jeremy Gardner, Adam Cronheim) find their relationship becoming strained as they struggle to survive each day.

This is a relationship movie about what can pull you apart.

Zombieland (2009)

Available on to stream on Amazon Prime, Vudu, YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, and Starz

After a virus turns most people into zombies, the world’s surviving humans remain locked in an ongoing battle against the hungry undead. Four survivors — Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and his cohorts Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) — abide by a list of survival rules and zombie-killing strategies as they make their way toward a rumored safe haven in Los Angeles.

This has more humor than horror, but the movie also makes you think what you would actually do in the wake of a zombie apocalypse.

Fido (2006)

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, Vudu, iTunes, and Cinemax

When a cloud of space dust causes the dead to rise as ravenous zombies, the ZomCon Corp. emerges to conquer the creatures and domesticate them to become menial workers and pets for humans. Now, in an idyllic town, a skeptical boy (K’Sun Ray) finds a best friend in his family’s new fiend, which he promptly names Fido (Billy Connolly). But Fido’s control collar malfunctions, and the neighbors wind up on the menu.

This is another humor over horror here, although it shows that you shouldn’t be nasty, even to zombies.

Crimson Peak (2015)

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, Vudu, and iTunes

After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young Edith (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself swept away to his remote gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille, Thomas’ alluring sister and protector of her family’s dark secrets. Able to communicate with the dead, Edith tries to decipher the mystery behind the ghostly visions that haunt her new home. As she comes closer to the truth, Edith may learn that true monsters are made of flesh and blood.

Creepy gothic horror story that plays out that you should be careful in whom you trust and love.

Candyman (1992)

Available to stream on Vudu

Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago’s Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman’s description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real.

The main things I liked about this movie are the lore and also the delicious Tony Todd.

Thirst (2009)

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, Vudu, YouTube, iTunes, and Google Play

Sang-hyun is a Christian priest who, in order to help find a cure, volunteers to be infected with a virus that’s devastating Africa. He’s left with an intense craving for blood and sex. As a hospital visitor he can quench his thirst for blood, and an intense affair with unhappily married Tae-ju provides him with a sexual outlet. As their relationship develops, Sang-hyun is left struggling to hang on to his old morality.

Lovely sound effects, not really.  I really had to sit and watch to get into the flow of this movie; it is not a typical Hollywood horror film.

Hellraiser (1987)

Available to stream on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, iTunes, and Netflix

Sexual deviant Frank (Sean Chapman) inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a box he bought while abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, who tear Frank’s body apart. When Frank’s brother (Andrew Robinson) and his wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), move into Frank’s old house, they accidentally bring what is left of Frank back to life. Frank then convinces Julia, his one-time lover, to lure men back to the house so he can use their blood to reconstruct himself.

This is a movie that I always come back to.  Torture style horror with a great cast.

Get Out (2017)

Available to stream on Vudu, YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and iTunes

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

A relationship that seems solid can always be not what it seems.  A little too obvious of foreshadowing in this movie when they can’t stop saying how “fine with the race difference the parents are.”
