January Monster Horror Movies

My monster movie list includes some of the classics, a little of the strange and out there, and hopefully a few scares you have not watched.  I tried not to feature any movies that I already have planned for future lists (i.e. science fiction –Alien).  I also left off some of the more popular monster movies from recently that I either laughed through throughout the movie (It Follows) or any monsters created by spiritual means (The Conjuring, Exorcist movies).

These movies are not placed in any specific order.  Please feel free to write a comment at the bottom and suggest your favorite monster movie.  I would love to watch something new.

Ratings:

IMDB: 1-10
Scare Score: 1-5 with 5 being the nail-bitingist, creepiest crawlies.
Rewatchable: 1-5 with 5 being I am buying a 4K disc.

It (1990)

Available to stream on YouTube and Google Play

In 1960, seven preteen outcasts fight an evil demon that poses as a child-killing clown. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the demon once and for all when it returns to their hometown.

Georgie!!!! Tim Curry makes this movie so creepy, it’s amazing. I first watched this after college and I seriously thought my roommate was going to grab the butcher knife out of the kitchen and kill me.  This movie creeped me out in all of the right ways.  I enjoyed the new IT as well, but nothing is like the classic.  The book by Stephen King ads more backstory for the kids and has so many more scares.

Cujo (1983)

Available to stream on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu and iTunes

In this tale of a killer canine, man’s best friend turns into his worst enemy. When sweet St. Bernard Cujo is bitten by a bat, he starts behaving oddly and becomes very aggressive. As Cujo morphs into a dangerous beast, he goes on a rampage in a small town. Stay-at-home mom Donna (Dee Wallace) gets caught in Cujo’s crosshairs on a fateful errand with her son, Tad (Danny Pintauro). Stuck in their tiny car, Donna and Tad have a frightening showdown with the crazed animal.

Too bad this movie doesn’t end like the book.

Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Available to stream on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu,  and iTunes

After making a horrific discovery in the basement of an old abandoned church, Trish (Gina Philips) and her brother Darry (Justin Long) watch their routine road trip home from college turn into a heart-stopping race for their lives. They find themselves the chosen prey of an indestructible force that relentlessly pursues them and gives a new and chilling meaning to the old song “Jeepers Creepers.”

This movie came out when my thirst and passion for horror was just starting.  In the time of The Ring and Halloween H2O, no movie really scared me until I saw this movie.  It scared me so much, I stayed up all night trying to watch Disney movies until the creeps I got from this movie left, which they didn’t.   Re-watching it now, I would say that it is still a horror packed movie filled with gore and lore.

Lake Placid (1999)

Available to stream on YouTube and Google Play

When a mysterious creature violently kills a man in a Maine lake, Jack Wells (Bill Pullman), the local game warden, looks into the bizarre case, along with Sheriff Hank Keough (Brendan Gleeson) and visiting paleontologist Kelly Scott (Bridget Fonda). Looking for clues in a tooth that the beast left behind, Kelly and the others eventually locate the monster, a massive and vicious reptile eager to devour anything in its path. Can the crocodile-like creature be stopped?

I really enjoyed this movie.  It has great acting, a solid plot and some tense moments throughout.  Betty White has an amazing role as a seemingly kind and oblivious little old lady.

Monster Squad (1987)

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, and iTunes

Five youngsters find themselves up against the combined might of Dracula, the Mummy, the Gill Man and Frankenstein’s Monster who arrive in town in search of a magic amulet.

Fun coming of age movie for kids.  Not scary for adults.

Splinter (2008)

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, iTunes, and Hulu

When their plans for a nature trip go awry, Polly Watt (Jill Wagner) and boyfriend Seth Belzer (Paulo Costanzo) decide to check into a motel. On their way, they’re carjacked and kidnapped by low-rent crooks Dennis Farell (Shea Whigham) and Lacey Belisle (Rachel Krebs), who take the victims and their SUV to a nearby gas station. Along the way, they encounter an increasingly terrifying horde of parasites, and if any of them intend to survive, they’ll have to outsmart the deadly organisms.

Great twists and turns throughout the movie.  I would recommend this to my movie group for the plot and indie feeling without being too artsy.

 [REC] (2007)

Available to stream on Amazon Prime, Vudu, YouTube, Google Play, and Hulu

Late-night TV host Angela and her cinematographer are following the fire service on a call to an apartment building, but the Spanish police seal off the building after an old woman is infected by a virus which gives her inhuman strength.

The original movie from Mexico (?) is better, but this remake is great as well.  I was lucky enough to see this movie in theaters when it first came out, and I am happy I did.  Great atmosphere of helplessness throughout this wild ride.  The plot is basically hope being ripped out from you, one bite at a time.

Penny Dreadful (2016-2017 TV Series)

Available to stream on Netflix, Showtime, YouTube, Amazon Prime, iTunes and Google Play

Many people are familiar with classic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. “Penny Dreadful” brings those and other characters into a new light by exploring their origin stories in this psychological thriller that takes place in the dark corners of Victorian London. Sir Malcolm is an explorer who has lost his daughter to the city’s creatures, and he will do whatever is needed to get her back and to right past wrongs. His accomplice, seductive clairvoyant Vanessa Ives, recruits charming American Ethan Chandler to help locate Sir Malcolm’s daughter and slay some monsters. Oscar-winner Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”) is one of the series’ executive producers.

Frankenstein, Vampires, Dr. Jekyll, Victorian asylums, Werewolf, Old West, Witches are all in this striking TV series.  You will love this dark and decadent TV series.
